  • When is political compromise acceptable--and when is it fundamentally rotten, something we should never accept, come what may? What if a rotten compromise is politically necessary? Compromise is a great political virtue, especially for the sake of peace. But, as Avishai Margalit argues, there are moral limits to acceptable compromise even for peace. But just what are those limits? At what point does peace secured with compromise become unjust? Focusing attention on vitally important questions that have received surprisingly little attention, Margalit argues that we should be concerned not only with what makes a just war, but also with what kind of compromise allows for a just peace. Examining a wide range of examples, including the Munich Agreement, the Yalta Conference, and Arab-Israeli peace negotiations, Margalit provides a searching examination of the nature of political compromise in its various forms. Combining philosophy, politics, and history, and written in a vivid and accessible style, On Compromise and Rotten Compromises is full of surprising new insights about war, peace, justice, and sectarianism.

  • Examines effects of the environmental distribution of antimicrobial resistance genes on human health and the ecosystem Resistance genes are everywhere in nature—in pathogens, commensals, and environmental microorganisms. This contributed work shows how the environment plays a pivotal role in the development of antimicrobial resistance traits in bacteria and the distribution of resistant microbial species, resistant genetic material, and antibiotic compounds. Readers will discover the impact of the distribution in the environment of antimicrobial resistance genes and antibiotics on both the ecosystem and human and animal health. Antimicrobial Resistance in the Environment is divided into four parts: Part I, Sources, including ecological and clinical consequences of antibiotic resistance by environmental microbes Part II, Fate, including strategies to assess and minimize the biological risk of antibiotic resistance in the environment Part III, Antimicrobial Substances and Resistance, including antibiotics in the aquatic environment Part IV, Effects and Risks, including the effect of antimicrobials used for non-human purposes on human health Recognizing the intricate links among overlapping complex systems, this book examines antimicrobial resistance using a comprehensive ecosystem approach. Moreover, the books multidisciplinary framework applies principles of microbiology, environmental toxicology, and chemistry to assess the human and ecological risks associated with exposure to antibiotics or antibiotic resistance genes that are environmental contaminants. Each chapter has been written by one or more leading researchers in such fields as microbiology, environmental science, ecology, and toxicology. Comprehensive reference lists at the end of all chapters serve as a gateway to the primary research in the field. Presenting and analyzing the latest findings in a field of growing importance to human and environmental health, this text offers readers new insights into the role of the environment in antimicrobial resistance development, the dissemination of antimicrobial resistant genetic elements, and the transport of antibiotic resistance genes and antibiotics.

  • The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program brings campus-enrolled and incarcerated students together as classmates in postsecondary courses built around dialogue, collaboration, and experiential learning. Contributors to this book consider the broader lessons that Inside-Out provides for community-based learning praxis, prison education and postsecondary teaching in general, both on campus and in community settings. An international network of practitioner-scholars probe the challenges and contradictions inherent in community-based work, but especially charged in the prison setting: the intersections of race, class and gender, and the tensions between teaching and activism, evaluation and advocacy, and compromise with and resistance to oppressive and dehumanizing systems. At a time when many in the Academy are seeking to deepen the impact of the community-based learning initiatives on their campuses, Turning Teaching Inside Out offers a model.

  • A comprehensive review of the most current scientific research on ABC transporters and multidrug resistance ATP-binding cassette transporter genes (ABC transporters) are known to play a crucial role in the development of multidrug resistance (MDR). MDR is the ability of pathologic cells, such as tumors, to withstand chemicals designed to target and destroy such cells. In MDR, patients who are on medication eventually develop resistance to not only the drug they are taking, but to several different types of drugs. ABC Transporters and Multidrug Resistance offers an essential resource for pharmaceutical researchers who are working to discover drugs to counteract multidrug resistance in diseases such as cancer. In one comprehensive volume, this book contains a collection of the most current knowledge on the involvement of ABC transporters in drug transport and resistance. This comprehensive volume provides an overview on the description of the structure, the genome, normal tissue expression, physiological aspect, and mechanism of action of the ABC protein. The expert contributors explore the expression, detection, and implications of ABC proteins in hematological malignancies and solid tumors and ABC proteins and pathogenic microorganisms. This volume also explains MDR modulation through inhibition of ABC transporters and the design of inhibitors and mechanism of action. In addition, the book offers essential information on the biological and clinical aspect of multidrug resistance.

  • This book, which is the translated version of a Swedish book, combines a general introduction of a variety of antibiotics with a more in-depth discussion of resistance. The focus on resistance in learning about antibiotics will help future scientists recognize the problem antibiotics resistance poses for medicinal and drug-related fields, and perhaps trigger more research and discoveries to fight antibiotic resistant strains. Current overviews of the topic are included, along with specific discussions on the individual mechanisms (betalactams, glycopeptides, aminoglycosides, etc) used in various antibacterial agents and explanations of how resistances to those develop. Methods for counteracting resistance development in bacteria are discussed as well.

  • Antibiotic resistance of the bacteria has become the most important issue all over the world. This is not only important in medical area but is also questioned in food production industry. Enterococci are more beneficial effective bacteria in food industry due to their esterolytic, lipolytic activities in cheese, sausage and other fermented foods. In addition, they are used as starter cultures in fermented foods and used as probiotic in human and animal health. However, they are not considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) microorganisms in food production sector because of their acquired antibiotic especially vancomycin resistance abilities and virülence genes as well as being the causes of untreatable nosocomial infections in hospital settings. This book provides, genetic diversity between food and clinical based enterococci to understand dissemination of vancomycin resistance. In addition, the correlations between virülence genes and vancomycin resistance have analysed in this book. The analysis may help some light on the role of food enterococci related dissemination of virülence genes and vancomycin resistance for professionals both food and clinical microbiologists.

  • Gliomas are refractory to chemotherapy because of acquired resistance, which is associated with changes in important cellular processes, such as cell cycle kinetics and cell death. The mechanistic relationship between resistance markers and failure of chemotherapy remains to be elucidated. To that end, identification of biological systems and their interactions is of great promise. We developed a mathematical model to provide a quantitative distinction between the influence of chemotherapy on cell cycle arrest and cell death from dose response curves and also applied this methodology to track the acquisition resistance to chemotherapy. We have also generated a panel of glioma cell lines with acquired resistance to chemotherapy and performed gene expression profiling and functional network analysis to unravel molecular pathways implicated in resistance. Our results provide insights into molecular pathways involved in resistance to carmustine in vitro. If they prove to hold for gliomas in human patients, these results can point the way towards improved therapeutic regimens that act upon NFκB mediated cell survival module in concert with cell cycle checkpoint abrogating agents.

  • Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,5, University of Applied Sciences Wernigerode, language: English, abstract: The work at hand aims at identifying recommendations on how to manage the employees resistance to organisational change. It starts off with a definition of important terms, followed by the main body of the work. Here organisational change and human needs will be analysed to find out what characterises them, what are their causes and impacts. The outcomes will than be compared in chapter five where the actual examination of employee resistance takes place. Here reasons for and results of resistance will be identified and discussed. Following that existing tools, theories and approaches on managing change and resistance will be described in chapter six while chapter seven contains practical examples for how resistance has been managed by real life companies - DaimlerChrysler and UPS. Finally, based on all the information that has been collected in the previous chapters, chapter eight will give recommendations on how resistance can be managed successfully. This will be followed by chapter nine, containing a critical discussion of the suggestions given and a summary of the complete work and its findings in chapter ten.

  • The intention for this book is to present the resistance to change phenomenon from a new perspective. The term resistance is complex and very often misinterpreted. Change leaders should adapt their perspectives on this subject and try to see resistance from a positive angle as well. By just changing the prospect of analyzing it, managers could experience a greater success in implementing new changes and effectively attract more employees onto their side.Instead of trying to eliminate or suppress employees' resistance, managers should rather use their reactions in a positive framework. Resistance may be useful as feedback and therefore, managers can use it to improve and refine the organizational change process.

  • Antibiotics resistance is one of the biggest challenges facing global public health. In the past sixty years, many classes of antibiotics have been developed, but duration of benefit appeared to be limited: resistance has emerged to every antibiotic class. Antibiotic resistance seriously hampers treatment of infections and leads to increased length of stay, morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs, both in hospital and community settings. In the era of increasing bacterial resistance and in the absence of new effective antibacterial drugs, it is necessary to use the currently available agents optimally and appropriately. The inexorable increases in antibiotic resistant rates have led to calls for reduction in the levels of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, and to improve treatments protocols to maximize the life span of these drugs. While the expected outcomes is clear, the process by which is to be achieved is not. Of the interventions designed to reduce antibiotic resistant rates in hospitals, one that is currently attracting considerable interest,is antibiotic cycling. This is research evaluated the impact of antibiotic cycling in antibiotic resistance and utilization
